Samsung explores 5G technology
Mobile phone manufacturer Samsung has begun developing 5G mobile technology, which would enable a film to be downloaded to a personal or business mobile phone in just one second.
The electronics giant claims that the 5G network is “several hundred times faster” than the recently released 4G, and that it will enable users to send huge amounts of data “practically without limitation”.
As a result of the ultra-high speeds, subscribers could potentially enjoy a huge number of different services on the next generation handsets; these services include 3D games and movies, instant streaming of ultra HD videos, and remote medical services.
The more enthusiastic members of the tech community will have to wait, however, as the technology is still being developed and is unlikely to appear in a handset until around 2020.
The current substantial 4G network – which is provided by EE – offers customers speeds of between 8 Mbps and 12 Mbps, and some cities are expected to see speeds of 20 Mbps by the summer. Other networks are currently in the preparation process for launching their own 4G services.
The new technological advances from Samsung would outstrip even the impressive 4G network, however, and offer insight into a potential future that would see data arriving almost instantly.
Current testing, which made use of “adaptive array transceiver technology”, showed speeds of 1.056 Gbps; however, this was limited to a distance of two kilometres.
Samsung, which is currently the world’s top smartphone manufacturer, hopes that this will encourage other firms to step up their research on the great potential that the 5G network could offer.
