BlackBerry phablet coming soon
The CEO of BlackBerry, John Chen, has revealed that the company is to launch a phablet device.
BlackBerry has been struggling recently and it is hoped that the new device will turn things around. The new device, which will be called the Passport, is still in the development stage; however, the plan is to officially launch it in September and consumers will be able to purchase the device in late 2014 or the early part of 2015.
Some details about the new phablet device have already been revealed. The handset will have a 4.5-inch square screen with a resolution of 1,400 x 1,400 and will include the distinctive QWERTY keyboard that is a feature of BlackBerry devices.
Industry experts have been speculating that the device will have a Snapdragon processor and feature an Adreno 330 graphics chip. The battery is thought to be 3,450mAh and the handset is expected to have 3GB of RAM.
BlackBerry has also announced the launch of a new smartphone ‒ the BlackBerry Classic ‒ although few details have been disclosed. Mr Chen wants to remain competitive in the smartphone market and also to make BlackBerry a force to be reckoned with in machine-to-machine communications.
It has also been revealed that BlackBerry has begun to turn the tide on its losses. A profit of £14 million ($23 million) was registered for the first quarter of 2014, compared to a loss of £249 million ($423 million) in the previous quarter.
