EE launches UK’s first WiFi calling service
EE has announced that it has launched its WiFi Calling service, which allows people in any premises with WiFi connectivity to make calls and send texts using WiFi.
The aim of this service is to help those who do not receive a good mobile signal, even if this only applies to part of their property. Around four million people say that there is at least one room in their property where they cannot get a good mobile signal and this new service will be beneficial for them, as it will for those who spend time working from home.
A service such as WiFi Calling can also increase the value of a property. The president of the National Association of Estate Agents, Simon Gerrard, said that good mobile service is something that people look for when they are searching for a new property.
WiFi Calling uses the phone’s contacts book, dialler and text button; therefore, those who want to make use of the service will not have to download an app. The service is initially available on the Nokia Lumia 640, the new Samsung Galaxy S6 range, iPhone 5s, 5c, 6 and 6 Plus.
The new technology also paves the way for London’s commuters to chat and text inside the capital’s 150 Underground stations where WiFi connections are currently available.
More handsets will be added to the service in the future and it is estimated that more than five million EE customers who pay monthly will be able to use WiFi Calling by this summer, including small business and corporate 4GEE customers.
