EE added more customers to its 4G services in the first quarter of 2015 than any other mobile operator in Europe.

The company acquired an additional 1.7 million customers for 4G services during the three months from January to March. This has seen the number of 4G accounts triple from the same time last year, taking the total to 9.3 million.

EE has set a target of reaching 14 million 4G customers in 2015 and has announced that it is delighted to have become the largest provider of 4G services in Europe. In addition to the increase in 4G customers, the company can also boast an additional 50,000 broadband customers and claims to be the fastest-growing provider in the UK.

The company says that its double-speed 4G is responsible for the huge increase in customers. More than half of its new customers signed up for this particular service, which is currently exclusive to EE.

The increase in the number of EE customers does not mean higher revenue, however, with the average monthly income per user falling by 0.5%.

BT is currently in negotiations to buy EE at a cost of £12.5bn, as it wants to return to the provision of mobile services.

The chief financial officer of EE, Neal Milsom, said that the company is “delivering strong, consistent commercial performance” and that the popularity of smartphones means that the company can offer a wide range of services and products.
