The latest report from RootMetrics into 4G services has revealed that EE is still leading the way in most measures.

The report, which was compiled using a number of different measures in the biggest cities in the UK, clearly demonstrates that EE is out in front; however, it also shows that the company’s rivals are starting to close the gap.

The tests were carried out in the last six months of 2014, with the four main networks tested in cities such as Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, London, Manchester, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Nottingham and Sheffield.

The results reveal that EE had a 4G footprint with a median rate of 79.3%. Vodafone’s median footprint was 58.2%, O2’s 52.7% and Three recorded just 24.8%.

EE offered 4G services to all 16 cities examined for the report. Both Vodafone and O2 covered 13 of these cities and Three covered 14, although the latter had a much smaller footprint than the other providers.

EE is also ahead of other providers when it comes to download speeds, achieving a speed of 94.1Mbps in Belfast. O2’s fastest speed was recorded in London, with 64.7Mbps, while  Vodafone recorded 64.5Mbps in Belfast and London and Three achieved a speed of 50Mbps in Sheffield; however, the median speeds more accurately reflect the service received by the customer.

EE’s median speed is above 20Mbps in 75% of these markets, with Vodafone only recording this speed in three cities and O2 in two cities.
