Apple unveils new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
Apple has launched its new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus at a gathering of more than 7,000 people in California.
The two new handsets include 3D Touch technology, which is designed to monitor and detect how hard the user presses the screen. Apple CEO Tim Cook launched the handsets, labelling them “the most advanced iPhones ever” while demonstrating the two handsets and the new features they have been given.
The iPhone 6s has a 4.7-inch screen and the same aluminium body as the previous version. The processor in the handset has been improved and is now powered by the Apple A9 chip produced by Samsung. The RAM on the handset has also been upgraded to 2GB.
Consumers can choose from 16GB, 64GB and 128GB storage options and the camera is an impressive 12MP for the rear with an iSight sensor. The front-facing camera is 5MP and the retina screen can be used to create a flash. The rear camera can also be used for videos, which can be edited on the handset. Photos can be used to create short GIFs and include sound.
Turning to the iPhone 6s Plus, the user will find a screen size of 5.5 inches. Again this handset has been given the Apple A9 chip, which Apple believes offers 70% faster processing than the A8 chip installed in the iPhone 6.
The 3D Touch technology is another version of the Force Touch software included in the Apple Watch. This new technology means that shortcuts on the home screen can be included and there are two new gesture controls on the handset. The first is Pop, which is is a harder pressure, and the second is Peek, which is a lighter touch used when just a peek is needed at a message or photo.
There are four metal finishes available for the handsets: gunmetal grey, rose gold, gold and silver. The handsets will be available from all main mobile phone service providers and can be pre-ordered in the UK from 12th September. They will be on sale less than two weeks later.
Alongside the new handsets was the launch of the iPad Pro, referred to as the ‘monster iPad’. This new model has been given a 12.9-inch screen and a new 9x chip powers the unit. With a total of four speakers and a depth of just 6.9mm, there is also a case with a built-in keyboard in a similar style to the Surface tablet produced by Microsoft.
Users can also purchase an Apple Pencil, which is a stylus designed to be used with Apple products. The company has also launched a new TV box with a remote control that features a touch surface to make controlling menus easier than ever. Apple enthusiasts will appreciate the Siri button, which enables voice control for searching.
