Sky ditches satellite dish with launch of streaming TV
Sky is bringing the ultimate cord-cutting device to the market in the form of ‘Sky Glass’, a new 4K TV that will deliver its service via Wi-Fi and eliminate the need for a set-top box or bulky satellite dish.
Sky believes that it is the right time to launch an integrated device as consumers are becoming frustrated with a growing number of separate gadgets and digital platforms that are cluttering living spaces.
Sky Glass brings everything together, including speakers and a subwoofer, so viewers only need a single wire, plug and remote to watch their favourite TV shows and movies through broadband internet.
All of the biggest streaming services will be on there, including Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer, making it a one-stop shop for all things entertainment.
It will be available in three different sizes, 43-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch, with each of these featuring a cutting-edge 4K QLED display.
Customers can either buy the TV in full with prices starting from £649, or opt to pay from £13 per month on top of a Sky TV subscription.
Sky will also send a Puck streaming device to allow Sky Glass owners to access Sky services on existing TVs in the home.
This is the first time that Sky has ever launched a device that bypasses a satellite dish and box, both of which are needed for its premium Sky Q service.
Sky product director Kathy Morel said that the new device would finally allow people in older properties and flats to sign up and access its services.
