Ofcom proposes plan to switch operators by text
Under a new plan proposed by Ofcom, mobile phone users will have the ability to change operators by texting the provider that they wish to leave.
Ofcom noted that about 38% of consumers currently experience at least one major difficulty when attempting to switch providers. The proposed system would eliminate the need for consumers to speak to their current provider if they want to make a change.
Under the proposal, consumers would send a text to their current provider, which would then send back a text with a code. This code would then be texted to the new provider, and the switch would take place within one working day. The proposed new system, which Ofcom calls Auto Switch, allows consumers to keep their old number or change to a new one if they prefer.
Ofcom previously proposed a system where consumers would have to contact their new provider, which would then be responsible for making the switch. However, the regulator found that the original proposal would cost an estimated £87m over ten years rather than the expected £44m under the new plan.
Lindsey Fussell, the Director of Ofcom’s Consumer Group, said: “We want people and businesses to benefit from simpler, speedier mobile switching, making it easier for them to vote with their feet and take advantage of choice in the market. Our ‘text-to-switch’ plans would give greater control to mobile customers about when and how they switch and prevent losing providers from delaying and frustrating the switching process.”
Ofcom is accepting comments on the proposal until 30th June and expects to issue its final decision sometime in autumn.
