Apple is ushering in a “new era for iPhone” after launching four new devices built for its latest AI platform, Apple Intelligence.

The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max have increased RAM and faster CPUs compared to the previous models to power the on-device AI tasks.

However, Apple Intelligence won’t be available at launch.

Apple is set to roll out the new suite of AI tools with iOS 18.1 in October, and only for localised versions of English until 2025.

Other changes for the iPhone 16 line-up include a larger 6.9-inch display for the Pro Max and a 6.3-inch display for the Pro.

The camera system has also been upgraded, with a new 48-megapixel “Fusion” sensor with a 2x telephoto function available across all four models.

However, the most premium “quad-pixel” lens capable of shooting video at 4K120 fps is reserved for the two Pro models.

Design changes are thin on the ground after last year’s overhaul to support USB-C, but a new ‘Camera Control’ button does offer touch and pressure-sensitive controls.

The ‘Action Button’ from the previous iteration also makes its way to the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models.

Finally, there are more powerful A18 and A18 Pro processor chips and 8GB of RAM, which help to deliver a “huge leap” in performance.

The iPhone 16 models are available to pre-order before a global launch on Friday (September 20).

In the UK, the base 16 model will retail from £799, while the 16 Pro Max will be the most expensive at £1,199.
