Three New Year’s tech resolutions for 2025
The New Year is a time for fresh beginnings and positive changes in our lives. As technology plays a major role in our daily existence, ridding ourselves of bad habits and establishing good ones can help us to navigate the digital world safely and more productively in 2025.
1. Manage passwords
A study by the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) found that millions of people are using incredibly basic (and easy to guess) passwords such as ‘123456’ and ‘qwerty’.
With the growing risk of security breaches and fraud online, you should regularly update your passwords with password management tools such as LastPass or NordPass.
2. Limit social media usage
As governments around the world consider banning social media for younger children and teenagers, it is time to be more mindful about how we use Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X and other platforms.
In the UK, the average user spends more than two hours on social media. To wrestle some of this time back, try to take breaks and disconnect from apps entirely on specific days or weekends, and set limits – 10 minutes, 15 minutes, etc. – so that you don’t end up doomscrolling.
3. Be vigilant online
The age of artificial intelligence (AI) is here, making it difficult to distinguish fiction from reality. In addition to limiting our time online, we should also be more aware of what we consume and diligent in verifying sources and fact-checking.
If you see a clickbait headline or unverified image that could be AI-generated, think twice before reading and sharing it with others. Also, try to replace social media news with higher-quality articles from print publications.
