Vodafone 4G launches this month
UK mobile network Vodafone has announced that it is to launch its own 4G network at the same time as rival O2, with both Sky Sports and Spotify set to work with Vodafone as part of its launch.
London will be the first city to receive the new service, which is set to launch on 29th August. 12 other cities will follow by the end of the year, including Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester and Liverpool.
Vodafone has said that its own 4G network may be accessible slightly later than O2’s, but that this is due to more stringent quality testing. Guy Laurence, the chief executive of Vodafone, has said that he expects the 4G network to be on average six times faster than the company’s current 3G network.
Part of the selling point for the new network will be the new content bundles, which will become available from 12th August and will include deals from Sky Sports and Spotify.
Mr Laurence said: “This whole period of mobile is not going to be won or lost in one day. The entertainment packages are available nationwide. I absolutely fundamentally believe people want to consume content on their mobile phones.”
Though the move will interest users, both networks are entering the 4G network some 10 months after EE, which is planning to have one million 4G subscribers by the end of the year. Whether the two networks will be able to catch up will be the main point of interest for many mobile users.
